Medicare Open Enrollment: What to Know Before October 15

Zach Avery |

Medicare Open Enrollment is approaching, making now a good time to start reviewing your current coverage and preparing for the year ahead.

Medicare Open Enrollment takes place each year from October 15 through December 7. During this period, people with Medicare can make certain changes to their health and prescription drug coverage. Changes made during Open Enrollment generally take effect on January 1 of the following year.

Even if you are satisfied with your current Medicare coverage, reviewing your plan each year can be an important part of preparing for your healthcare needs.

Why Review Your Medicare Coverage Every Year?

Your current plan may have worked well for you this year, but Medicare plan details can change from one year to the next.

Depending on your plan, changes may affect costs, coverage, provider networks, prescription drug coverage, and other plan details. Your personal healthcare needs can change as well.

Maybe you started taking a new prescription. Perhaps you see a new doctor or specialist. Your preferred pharmacy may have changed, or you may simply want to know whether another coverage option better fits your current situation.

Open Enrollment gives you an opportunity to review those factors before the new plan year begins.

Look for Your Annual Notice of Change

If you are enrolled in a Medicare plan, watch for an important document called the Annual Notice of Change, or ANOC.

Plans send this notice each fall to explain changes in coverage, costs, and other plan details that will take effect in January.

Instead of immediately assuming your existing plan will work exactly the same next year, take time to read your ANOC and identify anything that could affect you.

What Can You Do During Medicare Open Enrollment?

What you can change depends on the type of Medicare coverage you currently have.

  • Join, drop, or switch Medicare Advantage plans.

  • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan.

  • Switch from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare.

  • Join, drop, or switch Medicare prescription drug plans if you have Original Medicare.

If you make a change during this period, the new coverage generally begins January 1, as long as the plan receives the enrollment request by December 7.

What Should You Review?

Before comparing your options, it can help to gather information about your current healthcare needs.

Consider your doctors and specialists, prescription medications, preferred pharmacies, anticipated healthcare needs, and current plan information.

Then review the information your plan sends you for the upcoming year.

Remember that the lowest premium does not automatically mean a plan will be the right choice for your individual situation. Coverage, cost-sharing, prescription drug coverage, provider access, and other factors can all play a role.
