Medicare Open Enrollment 2026: What to Know Before Choosing Your 2027 Coverage

Zach Avery |

Medicare Open Enrollment is almost here. From October 15 through December 7, people with Medicare have an opportunity to review their current health and prescription drug coverage and make changes for 2027.

Even if you’re satisfied with your current plan, reviewing your coverage each year is an important part of managing your healthcare.

Why Should You Review Your Medicare Coverage Every Year?

Medicare health and prescription drug plans can change from year to year.

Your premiums or other costs may change. A prescription you regularly take could be covered differently. Your preferred pharmacy or healthcare provider could be affected by network changes. Plans may also make changes to benefits and coverage.

Your healthcare needs can change, too.

That means a plan that worked well for you in 2026 may or may not continue to be the right fit in 2027.

What Should You Review Before Open Enrollment?

Start by reviewing the information you receive from your current Medicare plan, particularly your Annual Notice of Change and Evidence of Coverage.

Then consider your personal healthcare needs.

Make a list of the prescription medications you currently take, including dosages. Write down the doctors, specialists, hospitals, and pharmacies you prefer to use. Think about the healthcare services you used most often over the past year and whether you expect your needs to change in 2027.

Finally, look at what you're currently paying for coverage and healthcare.

Having this information available can make comparing Medicare options much easier.

What Can You Do During Medicare Open Enrollment?

During Medicare Open Enrollment, people with Medicare can review and make changes to their Medicare health and prescription drug coverage for the upcoming year.

Depending on your situation, that could mean evaluating your current Medicare Advantage or prescription drug coverage, considering another available plan, or determining that your existing coverage continues to meet your needs.

The important thing is not to assume that you need to change plans—or that you should automatically stay with the same one.

Instead, take the time to compare.

Don't Wait Until December

Open Enrollment lasts until December 7, but waiting until the final days can make an already confusing decision feel even more stressful.

Starting early gives you time to gather your information, ask questions, understand your options, and make an informed decision.
